| “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” ~ Galatians 6:9
Recently, a 78-year-old man, let’s call him Bill, and his daughter came to our door to make a donation. They brought in clothes, some baby equipment, and a couple of other items. It was then that he shared a beautiful story with me.
He said when he was a young man and first married, he encountered a young woman he worked with who was pregnant. She was all alone in the world, so Bill took it upon himself to help support her as she prepared for the baby. When the beautiful baby boy was born, he went to the hospital to visit her. She told him she had not wanted to see her son because she was planning to give him away to be adopted. Bill told her to really think about that because she might regret it later. She told him that she was going to move to Florida where she could start over. He vowed to support her through the move upon which he didn’t hear from her until seven years later.
One day, Bill saw her standing by the side of the road. He pulled over and greeted the woman he had once helped. She was overjoyed to see him and asked him to wait a moment. A short time later, she returned with her 7-year-old son. She wanted him to meet the man who had supported her during such a difficult season and whose wise advice had encouraged her to think twice about giving her baby up for adoption.
As Bill told me, his eyes welled up with tears all these years later. He looked at me and said, “That’s why we donate here.”
Scripture often reminds believers we often don’t know the eternal impact of our everyday words, actions, or kindness. Indeed, the seeds we plant today can touch lives in ways we may never fully realize in this lifetime.
